Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I hire a doula?

Doulas are trained to provide emotional, physical, and continuous support throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period. They offer antenatal education and evidence-based information, empowering you to make informed decisions that feel right for you and your family.

Unfortunately, many women report difficult or traumatic birth experiences. This is a heartbreaking reality. Evidence shows that continuous support from a doula is associated with shorter labour, lower rates of intervention, increased confidence, and greater satisfaction with the birth experience. This support can contribute to a more positive and empowering journey into parenthood.

Doulas can also help you understand current guidance within the National Health Service (NHS), supporting you to explore your options and make choices that align with your values, preferences, and individual circumstances.

Above all, a doula’s role is to support, inform, and nurture you.

How is a doula different to a midwife and why would I need one when I have a midwife?

A midwife is a healthcare professional trained in the medical care of pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period. In the UK, midwives are regulated and work within the guidelines set by the National Health Service (NHS). Due to factors such as staffing levels, costs, and risk management policies, it is currently uncommon for the same midwife to provide continuous support throughout pregnancy, labour, and the postpartum period.

A doula, by contrast, is able to offer continuous, personalised support across your entire journey. Doulas focus on supporting the natural physiological process of birth while also providing evidence-based information, empowering you to make informed decisions that are right for you and your family. They take a holistic approach, recognising the emotional, physical, and practical needs of each family, and aim to help create the best possible experience and outcomes for both you and your baby.

How does booking work?

Step One: Get in touch

Complete the Contact Us form on my website. This gives me an opportunity to learn a little about you, your pregnancy, and the kind of support you are looking for.

Step Two: Free consultation

We will arrange a call and a meeting. This is a free, no-obligation consultation where we can get to know each other, discuss your hopes and preferences, and explore how I can support you. This is also your opportunity to ask any questions and see if I am the right fit for you.

Step Three: Booking and agreement

If you decide to proceed, we will complete a contract together. This ensures everything is clear and transparent, and sets out expectations so you feel fully informed and reassured.

Step Four: Begin your journey

We will schedule your antenatal sessions and begin working together. From this point, I will be there to support you with information, preparation, and continuous care as you move towards your birth and beyond.

But I have a Birth Partner?

That’s wonderful — your birth partner plays such an important role in your experience. A doula does not replace your birth partner; she supports both of you.

Birth partners are emotionally invested in you, which can sometimes feel overwhelming for them. A doula provides experienced reassurance so your partner can focus on loving and encouraging you rather than worrying about what to do next.

Many partners say having a doula actually helps them feel more confident and involved, not less. Instead of feeling responsible for remembering everything from antenatal classes, they can be fully present with you.

Think of it as a team:
Your midwife provides medical care, your partner provides love and connection, and your doula provides continuous emotional and practical support. Together, this creates a circle of care around you.

Is a doula just for home birth or unmedicated birth?

No. Doulas support all types of births, including hospital births, birth centre births, inductions, epidurals, and caesarean births.

A doula’s role is not to influence your choices, but to support you in whatever path feels right for you. This includes providing emotional reassurance, physical comfort, and evidence-based information throughout your pregnancy, labour, and postnatal period

How to pick a doula? are you right for me?

Choosing a doula is a very personal decision. You are inviting someone into one of the most important and vulnerable moments of your life, so feeling comfortable, safe, and understood is essential.

The most important factor is how you feel when you speak to them. Do you feel listened to, respected, and at ease? Trust your instincts — you should feel comfortable being yourself.

I invite you to read through my About Me page, which will give you a deeper insight into my approach and the support I offer.

When you feel ready, I offer a free, no-obligation consultation so we can meet, talk, and get to know each other. This is an opportunity for you to ask any questions, explore your options, and most importantly, see how you feel.

Choosing a doula is about connection and trust, and this space allows you to decide whether I am the right fit for you and your journey
