Why I Chose a Home Birth And Why You Might Consider It Too
Choosing where and how to give birth is one of the most personal decisions you’ll ever make. For me, a home birth for my second birth wasn’t just a preference — it was something that aligned deeply with how I wanted to feel, be supported and experience the arrival of my baby.
But alongside the emotional reasons, there is also evidence worth understanding. So this isn’t just a story — it’s a perspective, grounded in both experience and research.
In the UK, planned home birth is considered a safe option for those with low-risk pregnancies, particularly for second or subsequent babies. Research from the Birthplace Study found that home birth is associated with higher chances of a straightforward vaginal birth and significantly fewer interventions such as caesareans, instrumental deliveries, and episiotomies. Informed choice matters, and the right setting depends on your individual circumstances, spending time to evaluate this is important, I as a doula love exploring this with the families I support.
My Reasons for Choosing a Home Birth
1. A Deep Sense of Safety and Control
Being in my own environment allowed me to fully relax. That feeling of safety isn’t just emotional — it plays a physiological role in labour. When you feel safe, your body produces oxytocin, the hormone that drives contractions and supports labour progression.
At home, I felt completely in control. Every decision was mine. Everyone who entered respected my space and my wishes.
2. Fewer Interventions, More Trust in My Body
One of the biggest reasons I chose home birth was the lower likelihood of intervention. Evidence shows that people planning home births are less likely to need forceps, ventouse, or caesarean birth.
For me, this supported the kind of birth I wanted — one that was physiological, undisturbed, and led by my body.
3. Comfort, Freedom, and Familiarity
There is something incredibly powerful about labouring in your own space.
I could:
Move freely and stay active in early labour
Eat and drink when I wanted
Use the shower, fresh air, or simply change rooms
Create a calm, cosy, private environment
These aren’t small things — they can make a huge difference to how labour unfolds.
4. Certainty Around My Birth Preferences
In hospital settings, things like water birth pools aren’t always guaranteed. At home, I knew I would have access to everything I had planned for.
That certainty removed stress and allowed me to focus fully on labour.
5. Being Close to My Eldest Child
One of the most magical parts of my experience was being able to put my eldest to bed and know she was close.
That feeling of family, familiarity, and connection created the most beautiful “oxytocin bubble” — something that would have been impossible in a hospital setting.
6. A Positive Experience for My Partner
Home birth didn’t just impact me — it transformed my husband’s experience too.
He felt:
Grounded
Involved
Calm and informed
Instead of being a bystander, he was truly part of the birth.
7. The Postpartum Bubble
After birth, there was no moving rooms, no noise, no interruptions.
Just us. Getting into my own bed with my baby, in a quiet, familiar space, allowed rest, bonding, and recovery to begin immediately — gently and undisturbed.
